A VAT return is only as trustworthy as the records beneath it. Totals alone are not enough when something needs explaining later.
Explanation
Sales invoices, supplier bills, expense evidence, credit notes, and related reference records all matter. Missing context usually creates more work than the filing itself.
Real example
A founder can see the bank total for the month but cannot explain which purchases support the input VAT claim. The totals exist, but the evidence trail does not.
What to do in practice
Keep source records with the operational entry, use consistent VAT coding, and make review easier by storing explanation close to the transaction.
